Editorial Standards

Last updated: October 16, 2026

Our guides should help a homeowner understand the problem, recognize the limits of a remote explanation and make an informed next decision. Useful evidence matters more than article length or a product list.

Sources and technical claims

We prioritize government guidance, building-science resources and the documentation for the specific equipment or material being discussed. Examples include the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the Department of Energy’s Building America resources and ENERGY STAR.

We identify relevant sources and distinguish a documented requirement from an estimate, illustration or editorial interpretation. Climate, site conditions, product version and local codes can change what is appropriate.

Product comparisons and testing

A comparison based on specifications or published documentation is research, not a hands-on test. We claim firsthand testing only when it has actually been performed and its method can be described. We do not create fictional test results, customer experiences, professional credentials or installation histories.

Where products are compared, relevant factors may include rated capacity and test conditions, temperature limits, drainage, installation clearance, service access, warranty and documented suitability. A high advertised number is not enough to establish a good fit for every home.

Photographs and illustrations

Photographs from other creators are credited under their applicable licenses. An illustrative project photograph does not mean that we inspected or carried out the work. If a diagram or generated illustration is used, it should be identifiable as an illustration rather than presented as documentary evidence.

Research and writing tools

Digital tools, including AI-assisted research and drafting, may help organize or prepare material. A generated answer is not a primary source or proof of a product claim. Responsibility for the published material remains with the publisher.

Commercial relationships

Affiliate commissions and referral arrangements must be disclosed clearly near the relevant recommendation. Compensation does not change a technical requirement or justify recommending an unsuitable solution. Sponsored material or supplied products must be identified when relevant. Our Affiliate Disclosure explains these relationships.

Corrections and updates

Please report a suspected error through our Contact page, with the URL and the statement involved. We assess corrections against the available evidence and revise affected material when warranted. A publication or update date does not guarantee that every product specification or local rule remains unchanged.

Limits of an online guide

Our publication cannot inspect a foundation, diagnose concealed damage, assess electrical safety or replace a qualified local contractor or engineer. Manufacturer instructions, applicable local requirements and an appropriate on-site assessment take priority over general examples. See our Terms of Use & Disclaimer.
